Mountainous region that develops along the valley of the Pescia river a few kilometers from Montecatini, with the presence of the “Ten Castella”, ten magnificent medieval villages perched on the lower peaks of the area, an itinerary rich in history and nature, with wonderful landscapes and unexpected discoveries. At least ten are the “castella” that rise around Pescia, the capital of the flower. We meet Pietrabuona, Medicina, Fibbialla, Aramo, San Quirico, Castelvecchio, Sorana (famous for the most delicate and digestible bean, Slow Food presidium), Stiappa, Pontito and Vellano; ancient names of villages still alive that recall deeds and events of a past and fairy-tale world. Villages, surrounded by walls, which once controlled the border between the Lucca and the Florentine lords. Castles that can still be visited by those are looking for traces of the past among the narrow uphill streets and the old stone walls, along ancient paths, among the chestnut trees, which connect the villages, suggesting an intact nature. We visit the village of Castelvecchio and San Quirico. Don’t miss a stop at the splendid 12th-century parish church dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and Thomas, built entirely of stone, which preserves intact the characteristics of Lombard architecture.
